I'MMA BACK

I've started drawing in my new Moleskine book and thought that it would be a fitting way to get this blog kick-started again. I'm hoping for this to be the first of many such updates throughout the year 2012!

Happy New Year, all!

Rod and Kate

Dave sent me a whole rake Rodney Tentakle script pages over the past few days, so I'm currently working out the niggly thumbnail stuff so I can try and figure out what way the pages will be laid out once drawn.

Anyways, I did some sketches while I was doing this. Note the freakishly over-long legs in the Rodney pic.

Tentakle Redux

Long time no see, eh?
Apologies for my long, lonnnnng absence...long story short: I had major art block. It's gone now.

In preparation for my trip to the New York comic con next month, I decided to go back over my character designs for Rodney Tentakle and give them a spit and polish, bring them up to date with where my style is at right now. Of course, the first characters I laid my hands on were Rodney and his dad, Doctor Tentakle. I didn't do anything too drastic, I just tried to simplify and streamline their designs -- some of my previous choices were overly busy, so I toned those elements back.

I'll be working on the various other characters over the next few days, so keep your eyes peeled for updates!

Right, on to the pics:

I hate cafés...

...I don't know about you lot but I can't stand cafés.

Now when I say 'cafés,' I mean the utterly cosmopolitan spots such as your Starbucks and what-not. I don't know why it is but I always feel incredibly awkward in such a setting, perhaps the waves of pretension given off by people there mixed with the smell of coffee (not to mention a hint of quiet despair) does something specific to my brain to make me feel this way.

It also helped that the table Ty and I were sat at was so close to another table that we could hear what was possibly the most heart-breakingly awkward conversation going on between a guy and a girl. I'm guessing it was their first date or something and -- hoo boy -- I felt for the guy, I really did. His conversational manner at first gave me the impression that he was interviewing this girl for a job or something. As time went by, I was put in mind of a ship that has sprung a pinhole leak -- painfully and oh-so-slowly taking on more and more water. I feel horrible for saying it but Ty and I garnered some entertainment from the poor chap's flailings.

Aaaaaanyhoo, enough of that. Here's some sketches I did while all that was going on:

Mega Drive

Yet again was out and about yesterday and have some images to share...

The image on the left was done by Mark Tjan, I did my own version of the characters on the right.
Mark then proceeded to do this wondrous sketch of me. Not a caricature, this is perfectly realistic.Aaaaaaand last but not least, Mark asked me to ink up some pencils he did of a smaurai type fellow. It was quite refreshing inking someone else's work for once.

The many looks of Agent Westrope

After some advice from Mr. Writer and others, I decided to try out some different looks for Mr. Westrope. I'm quite partial to the one on the upper left, my house mate likes the Hulk Hogan do on the bottom left.

Decisions, decisions...

More Blackstar goodness!

Some character designs I've done up for the next installment of Blackstar. Keep in mind, these designs are subject to change so what you see here may not be what you see in the comic.

Wheeeeee

Lots of images for you to look at in the latest update. Check 'em out!

Random head doodles.

Supes. Making a face.

Blackstar character sketches.

Richard J. Smith's 'Uncle Swifty.'

I won't even attempt to explain this. Just watch this video...

Aaaaand last, but certainly not least, Bob Byrne's character 'Mister Amperduke' from the fantastic book by the same name.

Doodles Schmoodles

I did the following during my day trip to Niagara Falls yesterday (nice spot by the way which mixes the loveliness of nature with the brashness of a seaside resort -- think Tramore in Ireland but about a million times more brash). Nothing special, just some head sketches and doodles to keep me occupied both on the train and while waiting for the train at the end of the day (by which time I was about ready to pass out).

Anyhoo, here you go!

Post Con '09

So, FanExpo '09 is over and it was...interesting. I had a good time but bloody hell, was business slow. I pretty much made back the money on my table but was unable to make back the cost of prints. I also realized that when I go to another con, I have got to do more fanart. What I discovered is that most people don't go to cons for art, they go to cons so that they can get pics of their favourite characters. Then again, that is just the nature of the beast -- I learned some good lessons this year and will be able to use that to my advantage when I go to my next con.

Anyhoo, on to pictures! First up, some sketches I did to pass the time at the con:
