Bits n' pieces

Lots of art for you today, both from my sketchbook and my stint at an art jam held at Sheridan University this evening.

First up, my art jam stuff:

And from my sketchbook, more Trek (well, mostly) stuff:

It's life, Jim, but not as we know it

Did up a not so great sketch of the ever-sexist Captain Kirk and before I knew it, I was drawing all of the main 60s Star Trek characters!

Spock, as always, is a pimp.

Tender Wiseau

A random assortment of pictures for you today.

First up, we've got some doodles I did in my sketchbook while in Toronto earlier on. Strange how that bald headed guy on the right looks almost identical to my former housemate. Less said about him, the better.

Next, a picture of the genius that is TOMMY WISEAU. In this pic, I captured a tender scene from his masterpiece, 'The Room.' If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you check it out (thanks to Dapper Dan for giving me the inspiration to draw this)

And last, but certainly not least, a coloured version of my pic from yesterday depicting Ty Dunitz.

Dreadnought

Well, it's just over a week before I leave Canada for dreary/good ol' Ireland so I decided I should draw up a caricature of Ty, my house-mate for the past 6 months.

This image is a highly realistic reproduction. I'm hoping to get a coloured version done up soon-ish.

My bee-yooooooo-tee-fur face

I was kind of sick of looking at my current online avatar (used on Facebook and Facebook as well as here) so I decided to do a new one.

Handsome, don't you think?

Shigsy

I decided to do up a pic of the great Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of the Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda franchises) since it was his birthday recently. Guy's a genius and videogaming just wouldn't be where it is today if it wasn't for his contributions to the field.

Here's to you, Shigsy!

Blackstar 2 sneak peek

Recently, I got the second part of Blackstar lettered up 'as Gaeilge' (ie. in Irish) for the second issue of the excellent Irish comic RíRá. So, I thought this'd be the perfect opportunity to whet your appetite with a sneak peek at a completed (and action-packed) page from Blackstar numero 2. Enjoy!

For those of you that can't read/understand Irish (pretty much the vast majority then) I will upload the pages in English after RíRá issue 2 is released.

Ugly-mugs-u-like

Found some long strips of paper I had forgotten about so I decided to put them to some good use. Have some random mugs!

Who's that gentleman?

His shades fill us with the power of hope and the aspiration to be greater than all!

So much green!

More marker sketches for you!

Marker Madness

Did a ton of drawing tonight using markers. I really enjoy using markers as they give you a lot of fluidity to your lines. Been a while since I actually had this much fun drawing!

I hate cafés...

...I don't know about you lot but I can't stand cafés.

Now when I say 'cafés,' I mean the utterly cosmopolitan spots such as your Starbucks and what-not. I don't know why it is but I always feel incredibly awkward in such a setting, perhaps the waves of pretension given off by people there mixed with the smell of coffee (not to mention a hint of quiet despair) does something specific to my brain to make me feel this way.

It also helped that the table Ty and I were sat at was so close to another table that we could hear what was possibly the most heart-breakingly awkward conversation going on between a guy and a girl. I'm guessing it was their first date or something and -- hoo boy -- I felt for the guy, I really did. His conversational manner at first gave me the impression that he was interviewing this girl for a job or something. As time went by, I was put in mind of a ship that has sprung a pinhole leak -- painfully and oh-so-slowly taking on more and more water. I feel horrible for saying it but Ty and I garnered some entertainment from the poor chap's flailings.

Aaaaaanyhoo, enough of that. Here's some sketches I did while all that was going on:

Epic Mickey

A friend on Facebook suggested that I should do 'cuter' drawings because "...women like cute!" apparently.

Well, I'm not one to balk at such a challenge so I decided to do up a hyper-cute version of Mickey Mouse (based on his appearance in the upcoming 'Epic Mickey' video game). After all, if I draw cuter things, women will simply fall at my feet...

So cute.

Don't drink and draw!

Went out for a drink tonight and did lots of drawings. OBSERVE!

Uncle Swifty

Richard J. Smith (AKA Hitlersbrain) kindly asked me a while back to do up a black and white version of his 'Uncle Swifty' character for a colouring book dedicated to said character. The book will be featuring many talented artists, including Dapper Dan and Neilando, so be sure to check it out!

I did up some sketches of the character to begin with, just so I could get comfortable with drawing the guy and also so that I could do the character justice without aping Richard's style...

Once I felt I was comfortable enough with drawing the character, I had to come up with an idea for the image. I was having difficulty with this as I didn't want to simply draw the character standing there like a statue but I couldn't think up of anything interesting for the character to do (I blame a major case of artist's block I was having at that moment). Then, I struck upon the idea of Uncle Swifty being just that...namely, an uncle. And what do all uncles inevitably do when drunk? Why, dance in a horrifically bad fashion is what. So, I did a quick sketch to figure out his pose...

Once that was done, it was simply a matter of laying out the lines and then inking them in. What you see here is pretty much what's going to be in the book (albeit, without the nasty red lines)...
Technically, I could have left it at that but I decided to add a splash of colour to the piece...

Aaaaaand there you go.

I can't believe I stayed up so long working on those colours. I'm mad. Mad, I tell you!

The power of Triangapal.

Ended up going out for a drink and meal tonight, Ty and I decided to turn our napkins into Triangapals. Ty's is the top one, mine's the bottom one...

We decided we wanted to take advantage of Triangapal's 'Awesome Might Power' (tm) so I took the plunge and placed his visage over my own, alas to no effect...

However, the Might Power exuded forth like an angry lion once Ty sacrificed his face to Triangapal's embrace. Nothing would ever be the same again...
